Persian Jewish Sofreh Aghd Decor

The symbolic Persian wedding spread, styled with the chuppah.

The sofreh aghd is the Persian wedding spread — a richly styled arrangement of symbolic items set before the couple. Los Angeles is home to the largest Persian Jewish community outside Iran, and many Persian Jewish weddings in Beverly Hills and on the Westside include both a chuppah and a sofreh. CHIC Flowers designs the sofreh as a floral centerpiece, in harmony with the chuppah and the reception.

What's on the sofreh

A traditional sofreh includes a mirror and a pair of candelabras, representing light and the couple's future; decorated flatbread; a basket of eggs and bowls of nuts, symbolizing fertility and abundance; honey for sweetness; sugar cones, which are grated over a cloth held above the couple; sweets; and flowers throughout. At Persian Jewish weddings, a Torah or prayer book takes the place of other holy books.

Families often provide heirloom pieces — especially the mirror and candelabras — and we design the spread around them.

Styling the spread

We build the sofreh on a low table or on the floor, with a backdrop behind the couple's seats. Flowers frame the mirror and candelabras and weave between the symbolic items, so the spread reads as one design. White flowers with gold and crystal are the classic look; blush and ivory or deeper jewel tones suit a more modern palette.

Sofreh and chuppah together

Couples combine the two in different ways. Some hold the chuppah and set the sofreh nearby for photos and family blessings. Others hold a separate sofreh ceremony before or after the chuppah. We design both in the same palette and plan the layout so guests can see each one, and so the transition between them is smooth.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sofreh aghd?+
It's the Persian wedding spread, a styled arrangement of symbolic items — a mirror, candelabras, bread, honey, sweets, and flowers — set before the couple during the ceremony.
Do you provide the sofreh items?+
We design the florals, backdrop, and layout. Families usually provide heirloom pieces such as the mirror, candelabras, and holy book, and we can help source the rest.
Can we have both a chuppah and a sofreh?+
Yes, and many Persian Jewish couples do. We design both in one palette and plan the layout so the day flows between them.
What colors are traditional for a sofreh?+
White with gold and crystal is the classic look. Blush, ivory, or jewel tones work well for a more modern sofreh.
