Sephardic Wedding Flowers & Henna Night

Henna nights, tallit chuppahs, and the warmth of Sephardic and Mizrahi traditions.

Sephardic and Mizrahi weddings — from Moroccan, Syrian, Iraqi, Persian, and other Middle Eastern and North African Jewish communities — bring traditions that Ashkenazi weddings often do not: a henna night before the wedding, a chuppah made from a tallit, and receptions that lean warm, colorful, and abundant. Los Angeles has large Sephardic and Mizrahi communities, and CHIC Flowers designs these weddings across LA and San Diego.

The henna night

Many Sephardic families hold a henna celebration in the days before the wedding. The bride — and often the groom — wears traditional dress, henna is applied to the palms, and family and friends sing and dance. The design is colorful and rich: a decorated seat for the couple, lanterns and textiles, trays of sweets, and florals in deep reds, golds, and jewel tones.

The tallit chuppah

In many Sephardic ceremonies the chuppah canopy is a tallit — often a family heirloom — held over the couple or fixed to the frame. We design a structure that presents the tallit beautifully, with florals on the posts and around the base rather than a full floral canopy, so the tallit itself stays the focus.

Ceremony customs

Sephardic customs vary by community. Some families wrap the couple in a tallit during the blessings; some do not have a bedeken; the ketubah is often read aloud in full; and the glass may be broken by the groom or by both. We ask about your family's customs and design the ceremony setting around them.

Reception palette and style

Sephardic receptions often favor warm, saturated palettes — terracotta, gold, deep pink, and orange — and abundant, generous tables. Mediterranean flowers such as garden roses, ranunculus, and citrus greenery suit the look. Where a family prefers a classic white-and-gold reception, we design that too.

Frequently asked questions

How is a Sephardic wedding different from an Ashkenazi one?+
Common differences include a henna night before the wedding, a tallit used as the chuppah canopy, the ketubah read aloud in full, and warmer, more colorful reception palettes. Customs vary by community.
Do you design henna nights?+
Yes. We design the couple's seat, backdrop, lanterns, textiles, and florals in the rich reds, golds, and jewel tones henna nights are known for.
Can you build a chuppah around our family tallit?+
Yes. We design the frame and florals so the tallit stays the focus, with flowers on the posts and base rather than a full canopy.
Do you serve Persian Jewish weddings too?+
Yes. See our Persian Jewish sofreh aghd page for the sofreh, which is a distinct Persian tradition.
