Kosher Venue & Florist Coordination

How we work within kosher and Shomer Shabbat requirements.

Couples sometimes ask whether a kosher venue or a Shomer Shabbat wedding changes what a florist can do. The honest answer is: a little, mostly around timing and access, and almost nothing about the design itself. CHIC Flowers has worked at kosher venues and with kosher caterers across Los Angeles and San Diego, and this guide explains what we coordinate and what you can expect.

What kosher means for flowers

Kosher rules govern food, not flowers, so the arrangements themselves are not affected. What changes is how we work in and around the kitchen and dining areas. At a kosher venue or with a kosher caterer, the mashgiach — the supervisor who ensures the kitchen meets kosher standards — may control access to certain areas and timing for when tables can be set.

We coordinate with the mashgiach and the caterer on when centerpieces go on the tables and how we move through the space, so our installation never interferes with kitchen supervision.

Shomer Shabbat timing

For observant couples, the bigger change is Shabbat. Vendor work is generally not wanted between Friday sunset and Saturday nightfall, so for Saturday night weddings we install on Friday and finish after Havdalah. For Sunday weddings, we install on Sunday morning or, at some venues, on Friday with Saturday untouched. We confirm the approach with the couple and venue at the start.

Synagogue guidelines

Synagogues have their own rules about florals in the sanctuary — what can be placed on or near the bimah, whether petals may be scattered, and when installation can happen relative to services. We ask for each synagogue's guidelines before designing the chuppah and ceremony florals.

What does not change

The design. A custom chuppah, bedeken and ketubah settings, and full reception florals are all possible at kosher and Shomer Shabbat weddings. We simply plan the schedule around the observance level so the floral production fits the day. It does not add to the cost.

Frequently asked questions

Do kosher rules affect wedding flowers?+
Not the flowers themselves. Kosher rules govern food, so what changes is access and timing around the kitchen and dining areas, which we coordinate with the mashgiach and caterer.
Can you set up on Shabbat?+
For observant couples, no. We install on Friday before sunset and finish after Havdalah, or on Sunday morning for Sunday weddings, depending on the couple and venue.
Does kosher-venue coordination cost more?+
No. It changes our schedule, not our pricing.
Do synagogues restrict florals?+
Each synagogue has its own guidelines for the sanctuary and bimah. We confirm them before designing the chuppah and ceremony florals.
