Mandap Rental vs Custom Design: What to Choose

The tradeoffs between renting a pre-built mandap structure and commissioning a custom design.

One of the most common questions Indian wedding couples ask is whether to rent a mandap structure from a rental company or commission a custom mandap from a full-service florist. CHIC Flowers builds every mandap we design in-house — which shapes how we answer this question. This page covers the real tradeoffs: cost, visual quality, fire safety, photography outcomes, and which choice makes sense for which kind of couple.

What mandap rental typically includes

Mandap rental vendors provide a pre-built structure (usually aluminum or wood frame) delivered to the venue, assembled on-site, and dressed with floral provided either by the rental company or by a separate florist. Rental inventory typically includes a limited set of frame styles — traditional four-pillar, round, and occasionally modern architectural — in standard sizes (twelve by twelve, fourteen by fourteen).

Rental costs generally run $3,000–$12,000 for the structure alone, plus additional floral cost if the rental company is not handling that part of the scope. Multi-day productions may involve daily rental fees. Rental structures are inventory items that have been used at many prior weddings and show appropriate wear — this is acceptable for most uses but photograph-sensitive couples sometimes notice.

What custom in-house fabrication includes

Custom in-house mandap fabrication means the structure is built specifically for your wedding. CHIC Flowers builds every mandap we design from our own frame stock (which we reuse across weddings as the underlying structure) with custom floral design, dressing, and finishing. The frame is ours; the design is yours.

Custom fabrication typically runs $8,000–$25,000+ for the structure and floral dressing combined (not separately quoted), scaling with size, density, and complexity. Our Tier 1 venue range cards on the pricing page show typical total mandap investment.

The advantage of custom fabrication is design-first flexibility. We size the mandap to your venue ceiling height, adapt footprint to guest count, engineer havan clearance to your pandit's ritual requirements, and deliver a finish quality that photographs as unique rather than inventory.

Cost comparison

Rental + separate florist costs often add up to similar or higher total than custom in-house fabrication, once structure rental, floral design, florist coordination markup, and delivery fees are combined. The economics frequently favor custom in-house when the total mandap budget exceeds $15,000.

For smaller budgets (under $10,000 mandap total), rental with a separate florist can be cost-effective and delivers acceptable results. Below $10,000, custom in-house fabrication is usually out of scope for luxury studios.

Fire safety and havan integration

Custom in-house fabrication has a meaningful fire-safety advantage for Hindu ceremonies involving open-flame havan. Our frames are engineered with agni kund clearance requirements built into the design from the start — base dimensions, pillar spacing, and floral placement all account for minimum three-foot flame clearance. Rental structures are designed as general-purpose frames and havan clearance is added on-site, which sometimes creates awkward proportions or clearance conflicts.

For couples having a traditional Hindu ceremony with open havan, this matters. Fire permit review goes more smoothly when the structure is engineered for flame rather than adapted to it.

Photography and visual outcome

Wedding photography is the primary long-term artifact of any mandap investment. Custom in-house fabrication typically photographs better because the structure is designed alongside the floral (rather than wrapped around a rental frame), proportions are calibrated to the specific venue and guest seating positions, and finish quality reads as intentional rather than rental.

For editorial-direction couples, magazine-submission-quality couples, and celebrity weddings where photography is a central deliverable, custom in-house fabrication is strongly recommended. For couples less focused on photography or working at mid-budget scale, rental with good floral dressing can produce perfectly beautiful results.

Frequently asked questions

Can we mix rental and custom — rent the structure, have you do the florals?+
Yes, and some families do. In this model, we design and install the floral scope and the rental company provides the structure. The coordination is cleaner than expected because we can specify rental frame requirements in advance. Cost sits between pure rental and pure custom in-house fabrication.
Does custom in-house fabrication mean the frame is disposable?+
No. Our frames are reusable stock that we refinish and redress for each wedding. What's custom is the floral design, dressing, finishing, and engineering around your specific venue and pandit requirements. This keeps custom fabrication economically viable at reasonable price points.
How do rental mandaps vary in quality?+
Significantly. Some rental vendors provide worn, scratched, or visually dated frames; others maintain inventory carefully. For wedding-critical photography, we recommend seeing the specific frame in person before booking with any rental vendor.
Which do you recommend?+
For Tier 1 luxury weddings with meaningful photography investment and Hindu ceremonies involving open-flame havan, custom in-house fabrication. For smaller budget weddings, LED-based havan alternative ceremonies, or fusion weddings where the mandap is less central — rental with good floral dressing works well.
