Breezy, oceanfront design for Malibu, Montecito, Laguna, and La Jolla estates — built for wind, sun, and salt air.
An oceanfront estate wedding is one of the most beautiful settings in Southern California, and one of the most demanding for flowers: sun, wind, and salt air test every stem. CHIC Flowers designs coastal estate wedding flowers for cliffside, beachfront, and bluff-top celebrations from Montecito and Malibu to Laguna Beach and La Jolla. This guide covers the flowers that hold up outdoors, the palettes that suit the coast, and how to design a ceremony and reception that feel effortless beside the water.

Light, airy, and natural. The ocean is the backdrop, and the flowers should frame it rather than compete with it — which means lower profiles at the ceremony, open sightlines at the reception, and arrangements with movement that look right in a breeze.
Palettes draw from the setting: white, sand, soft blue, sea-glass green, and sun-faded peach, with textural greenery, grasses, and olive or eucalyptus carrying the natural feel. It is luxurious in its ease rather than its opulence.
Durable blooms earn their place on the coast: phalaenopsis and cymbidium orchids, garden roses with sturdy heads, lisianthus, dahlias in late summer, anthurium, and well-conditioned hydrangea, alongside olive, eucalyptus, tropical foliage, and ornamental grasses that move beautifully in wind.
The most delicate luxury flowers — lily of the valley, sweet peas, poppies — wilt quickly in direct sun and salt air, so we reserve them for the bridal bouquet, shaded moments, and the indoor or tented portions of the day.
Coastal ceremonies favor low, weighted, wind-ready design: ground-level floral meadows along the aisle, substantial urns rather than tall airy structures, and arches engineered and ballasted for wind so nothing competes with the view or moves in a gust.
Timing matters as much as design. We plan the ceremony florals around the sun's position and the afternoon wind pattern typical of the coast, installing as late as the schedule allows so everything is fresh when guests arrive.
Tented, terraced, or on the lawn, the coastal reception keeps centerpieces low so the horizon stays visible from every seat — lush compotes, bud-vase clusters, and hurricane-protected candlelight that holds up in a breeze. A lounge and bar florals extend the design across the property.
As the sun sets and the wind drops, the evening becomes the most atmospheric part of the day; we design the lighting and candle plan with the planner so the florals are as beautiful after dark as at golden hour.
At La Jolla Country Club, on the cliffs above the Pacific, the ceremony installation was built to frame the ocean view rather than compete with it — an asymmetric arch in soft whites, creams, and touches of blush with trailing smilax vine — and the oceanside terrace cocktail hour carried airy arrangements in soft ivory. At the Bel Air Bay Club in Pacific Palisades, the ceremony on the ocean-facing terrace used a grand circular arch in ivory, blush, and soft peach, and the reception dining room carried a suspended floral ceiling of garden roses, peonies, and cascading greenery.
At Alila Marea in Encinitas, the bluff-top ceremony installation was soft whites and ocean-inspired blues with flowing greenery that moved in the coastal breeze, and the tables carried low arrangements of white roses, anemones, and dusty miller to echo the silver-blue water. At the Hilton Torrey Pines in La Jolla, white and blush blooms with natural greenery echoed the coastal sage landscape, with delicate accents on the ocean-view pergola. At the Hotel del Coronado, the day moved from a ceremony on the white sand beach to the ballroom with one continuous design.
Private coastal estates bring their own logistics: narrow hillside access, limited staging, multi-day builds for tents, and heat conditioning for every stem. We coordinate load-in, on-site refrigeration, and install timing with the planner and estate team so the production fits the property.
Because the setting is so exposed, we build in resilience — extra stems, wind-rated structures, and a late-install plan — so the flowers look effortless even when the weather is not.
