The Wedding Story
The Hotel Del Coronado is one of America's most iconic beach resorts — a Victorian landmark that has hosted presidents, royalty, and Hollywood legends since 1888. A wedding here demands floral design that honors the venue's storied elegance while creating something unforgettably personal.
CHIC Flowers designed a stunning beachfront ceremony with a dramatic arch of white garden roses, peonies, and cascading greenery framing the Pacific Ocean. The transition to the grand Crown Room ballroom featured completely transformed tablescapes with tall, dramatic centerpieces in romantic blush and ivory.
From the intimate ceremony on the white sand beach to the grand ballroom reception under the original 1888 sugar pine ceiling, every floral element was designed to create seamless elegance across the Hotel Del's diverse and historic spaces.
Why this venue is unique
The Hotel Del Coronado is the largest surviving wooden Victorian structure on the West Coast and the second-largest wooden building in the United States. It has hosted every sitting U.S. president since Benjamin Harrison. The Crown Room — our reception space — is the original 1888 dining hall with an all-sugar-pine dome ceiling held together entirely by dowels and wooden pegs, no nails. You cannot design florals for this room the way you design for any other ballroom in California.
Floral challenges we solved
The Crown Room's protected 1888 sugar pine ceiling means absolutely no rigging, no suspension, no drilling. Every tall centerpiece has to be fully self-supporting on the table surface, which constrains how high we can reasonably go before tipping becomes a concern. On the beach side, the ceremony arch faces direct ocean wind and saltwater spray — we treated every stem with a light hydrophobic coating and built redundant stabilization into the arch legs, then scheduled the install during the morning low tide window for a stable sand base.
Our design approach
We designed two distinct aesthetic worlds that share a single color palette — ivory and blush — so guests experience a narrative arc from beach to ballroom without visual whiplash. The beachfront ceremony used loose, wind-tolerant garden-gathered arrangements that complement the open seascape. Inside the Crown Room, those same blooms appear in structured, vertical forms that respect the Victorian formality of the architecture. The through-line is the garden rose, appearing in eight different varieties across the 13 installations, tying every moment of the day to the same botanical vocabulary.
