Peony Wedding Flowers

Season, cost, and off-season alternatives for the most requested luxury wedding bloom.

Peonies are the most requested flower in luxury weddings — enormous, ruffled, fragrant blooms that open from tight buds into dinner-plate flowers over the course of a day. They are also among the most seasonal. CHIC Flowers designs with peonies for bouquets, centerpieces, and installations across Southern California, and advises couples honestly on when they are available, what they cost, and what to use when they are not. This guide covers all three.

Why peonies are so beloved

Scale, scent, and drama. A peony opens from a golf-ball bud into a bloom the size of a hand, with layers of ruffled petals and a soft fragrance; a bouquet of five or six is a statement on its own. Favorite wedding varieties include Sarah Bernhardt in pink, Duchesse de Nemours and Festiva Maxima in white, Coral Charm, which fades from coral to cream as it opens, and Red Charm for deep, saturated color.

Their opening is part of the appeal: we receive peonies in bud and open them in the studio so they peak on the wedding day itself.

Peony season — and why it's limited

Domestic peonies are a late-spring flower: the main season runs from roughly April through June across California, Oregon, and Washington, with Alaska's cool climate typically extending supply into July, August, and early September. From November through January, Southern Hemisphere growers in New Zealand and Chile usually supply the market.

That leaves real gaps — February and March, and late September through October — when peonies are at their scarcest and, in many years, hard to source at all. Even within the Southern Hemisphere window, imported stems typically cost multiples of domestic peak-season peonies and vary in quality. Availability shifts year to year with growers, weather, and imports, so we confirm it for the specific date before committing a design to them.

What peonies cost

In their domestic season, peonies are a premium stem — well above a standard rose, roughly in line with a David Austin garden rose. Out of season, when available, they can cost several times as much, and we tell couples that plainly before committing a design to them.

The strategy that works at every budget is to use peonies as focal blooms — in the bridal bouquet and at the center of key arrangements — rather than throughout, with garden roses and ranunculus carrying the rest of the design.

Using peonies well

A bridal bouquet typically carries five to nine peonies with lighter flowers around them; a lush centerpiece uses three to five as its focal points. Because peonies are heat-sensitive and open quickly in warm conditions, we schedule their opening to the hour and avoid placing them in full sun at an outdoor ceremony.

Fully open peonies are the most beautiful and the most fragile — the timing between studio and ceremony is one of the most carefully managed parts of a peony wedding.

From our portfolio: peonies at work

Peonies appear in our portfolio in very different registers. At the Catamaran Resort on Mission Bay, Coral Charm peonies anchored a bold tropical palette with birds of paradise and abundant monstera, on an arch draped with tropical greenery and in overflowing garden-style centerpieces.

At Rancho Valencia in Rancho Santa Fe, ivory peonies sat in a soft pastel palette with blush garden roses and peach ranunculus, from the romantic cascading arch in the citrus grove to the low, abundant arrangements on the lantern-lit terrace.

Off-season alternatives

When the date falls outside peony season, garden roses are the closest substitute: Patience, Juliet, and Keira open to a cupped, ruffled form that reads as peony-like, and they are available year-round. In winter and early spring, Cloni and Butterfly ranunculus deliver the same layered fullness at a smaller scale, and double tulips offer a similar softness.

For late-summer and autumn weddings, dinner-plate dahlias such as Café au Lait give the same plate-size drama in warm, antique tones — often a better fit for the season's palette than an imported peony would be.

Frequently asked questions

When are peonies in season for weddings?+
Domestic peonies run roughly April through June, with Alaska typically extending supply into July, August, and early September. Southern Hemisphere growers usually supply November through January. February, March, and late September through October are the hardest months to source them, and availability in any month varies by year and grower.
Can I have peonies at a fall or winter wedding?+
Often, but at a premium and with variable quality — imported Southern Hemisphere peonies are usually available November through January, while late September and October are the scarcest and least reliable months. Availability varies by year and grower, so we confirm it for your date; where it falls short we suggest garden roses, ranunculus, or dinner-plate dahlias, which deliver a similar look in season.
How much do peonies cost for a wedding?+
In season they are a premium stem, roughly in line with a David Austin garden rose. Out of season they can cost several times that. Using peonies as focal blooms in the bouquet and key arrangements, rather than throughout, keeps the look within a luxury budget.
What flower looks most like a peony?+
Garden roses such as Patience, Juliet, and Keira are the closest year-round match, opening into a cupped, ruffled form. Cloni and Butterfly ranunculus give the same layered fullness in winter and spring, and dinner-plate dahlias give the plate-size drama in late summer and autumn.
How many peonies are in a bridal bouquet?+
Typically five to nine, with lighter flowers such as sweet peas, ranunculus, or lily of the valley around them. A bouquet of peonies alone is a classic statement; a centerpiece usually uses three to five as its focal points.
