The Wedding Story
Perched on the cliffs of La Jolla with panoramic ocean views, La Jolla Country Club is one of Southern California's most sought-after wedding venues. The club's timeless elegance and breathtaking coastal backdrop called for floral design that was both sophisticated and naturally beautiful.
CHIC Flowers designed a ceremony installation that framed the ocean view without competing with it — an asymmetric floral arch in soft whites, creams, and touches of blush with trailing smilax vine. The reception was equally refined, with low, abundant centerpieces of white peonies, garden roses, and lisianthus set on crystal-clear glass vases.
The oceanside terrace cocktail hour featured airy arrangements in soft ivory tones, while the formal dining room transformed with candlelit tablescapes and overhead greenery installations. This wedding showcased CHIC Flowers' ability to create distinct atmospheres for each moment of the celebration.
Why this venue is unique
La Jolla Country Club sits on one of the highest cliff points on the San Diego coast, which means the ceremony lawn looks directly into an uninterrupted 180-degree Pacific view. Most arch designs fight that horizon — ours was built to frame it. The club's 1927 Spanish Revival clubhouse also means the reception dining room reads very differently from the outdoor terrace, so we treated them as two separate design briefs within a single cohesive palette.
Floral challenges we solved
Coastal wind is the real adversary at this venue. Afternoon gusts off the Pacific can hit 15–20 mph on the ceremony lawn, which is why we built the arch asymmetrically with the heavier floral mass on the windward side and anchored the base with hidden sandbag counterweights. Every stem going outdoors had to be wire-reinforced, and we swapped anything top-heavy (we originally specified hydrangeas for the cocktail terrace) for sturdier lisianthus and spray roses that hold shape in wind.
Our design approach
We chose an asymmetric ceremony arch specifically because a symmetric one would compete with the horizon line behind the couple. By weighting the florals on one side and letting smilax vine trail off the opposite corner, the arch became a frame around the view rather than a barrier in front of it. Reception-side, we used crystal-clear glass vessels and low centerpieces so nothing interrupted sightlines across the tables in the formal dining room — the florals were meant to feel like part of the architecture, not decoration layered on top.
