Lavash & Honey Entrance Styling

The sweet welcome that opens an Armenian reception.

When the couple arrives at the reception, the groom's mother greets them at the entrance with lavash draped over their shoulders and a spoonful of honey — a blessing for a life of abundance and sweetness. It is one of the most photographed moments of an Armenian wedding. CHIC Flowers designs the entrance around it: florals at the doorway, a styled welcome table, and a setting that frames the family for the photos.

What the ritual means

Lavash, the thin Armenian flatbread, is placed on the couple's shoulders to ward off evil and bring abundance; the honey is fed to each of them for sweetness in the marriage. Families sometimes add other touches — breaking a plate at the threshold, sprinkling sugared almonds or rice, or a toast — depending on where the family comes from.

We ask which customs your family follows so the entrance design supports them.

Styling the entrance

We frame the doorway or entrance path with florals — an arch, a pair of tall arrangements, or a floral installation over the entry — so the welcome has a backdrop. The welcome table holds the lavash, honey, and any other items the family wants ready, styled with low florals and candles in the wedding palette.

Timing and photography

The welcome takes a few minutes, usually just before the couple's grand entrance into the ballroom. Because it happens at the entrance, the space needs to be finished and lit before guests begin arriving. We coordinate with the photographer and the venue so the entrance design is complete early and nothing is in the way of the moment.

Carrying the design inside

Entrance florals set the tone for the reception, so we design them in the same palette as the sweetheart stage and centerpieces. After the welcome, the entrance arrangements can often move inside to frame the dance floor or the cake table.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lavash and honey tradition?+
At the reception entrance, the groom's mother drapes lavash over the couple's shoulders and feeds them honey, a blessing for abundance and sweetness in the marriage.
Do you provide the lavash and honey?+
The family usually provides them. We design and style the entrance and the welcome table so the moment has a beautiful setting.
Can you build an arch at the entrance?+
Yes. An entrance arch or doorway installation is one of the most popular ways to frame the welcome, and it photographs beautifully.
When does the welcome happen?+
Usually just before the couple's grand entrance into the ballroom, so the entrance design has to be finished before guests arrive.
